Walk : Etna Outliers            route map

Description

This expedition on the lower slopes of Mount Etna provides wonderful views of the mountain and the opportunity to explore lava flows and smaller peaks. It’s an ideal introduction to the region and an excellent alternative if conditions are unsuitable for high-level walk.

Duration

2-6 hours depending on route chosen

Suggested Itinerary

From Bronte station, follow minor road south-east onto the slopes

Airport

Palermo (Ryanair) or Catania (BA, Air Malta, Thos Cook)

Accommodation at start

Plenty of accommodation at all price ranges in Catania.

Transport to start

For Palermo connection see Palermo page

From Catania central station and the city centre Metro trains run every 15 minutes to Borgo station

From Catania Borgo, Ferrovia Circumetna narrow gauge trains run roughly hourly to Bronte, taking nearly two hours, fare about 3 euro http://www.circumetnea.it/

Route

Leave Bronte by passing under the railway on a small road to the right, just north of the station.  Head generally south or south-east along Viale Kennedy, past S.S. Cristo.  Soon the road (named on map as Strada in basolato lavico) enters the national park, becomes cobbled, crosses the 1843 lava flow and reaches Casa Forestale. From here various waymarked paths shown on the map lead to Monte Ruvolo, Monte Lepre, Monti Tre Frati, Monte Peloso and Monte Minardo,

Maps

1:50,000 Parco dell’ Etna published by Touring Club Italiano shows the route.

1:60,000 Mt Etna ‘carta naturalistica e turistica / naturalistic and touristic map’ published by SELCA / CAI shows the geology of the region but is not suitable for route-finding.
